What the Wile E. Coyote Can Teach Us About Not Giving Up
Giving up on a goal is very different from changing the way you try to reach it. Sometimes when we are committed to a certain plan, we start to believe it is the only way to move forward. We try to follow the plan, and when it doesn’t work, we assume it is our fault.
It could be because the plan you are using doesn’t meet your needs. You can be committed to your goals without being committed to a plan that repeatedly leaves you disappointed and discouraged.
The Wile E Coyote can be inspiring because he keeps moving forward, even when things don’t go as planned. He never lets one unsuccessful attempt keep him from trying again. Most of us think being persistent means doing the same thing until it finally works. But true persistence requires awareness as well.
When you continue to follow the same restrictive plan, you might feel determined, but it can lead to overeating, guilt, and starting over. Trying harder isn’t always the answer; you might need to change what you are doing.
It can feel uncomfortable to change, especially when you have been taught that success comes from pushing harder. It takes courage to stop repeating what is familiar and try something new.
There will be setbacks, but when you pause and choose the next step from awareness, that is progress.
Your Plan of Action: Keep the Goal, Change the Approach
Don’t assume that you need to try hard enough when you feel as if you are not getting anywhere. Take a few minutes and look at how you have been trying to get there.
First, what is your goal? Then brainstorm why your current approach isn’t working. Maybe it isn’t working because your plan is too restrictive, or you're trying to change too much at once. Don’t toss your whole plan; keep what is working and build on that. Make only one small change at a time. This helps you to adjust to the new habit before you add anything else.
Don’t give up on yourself. You are allowed to adjust your goals to help you reach them.
And if you’re trying to make these changes and would like a supportive place to practice them, you’re welcome to join us inside the Beyond Emotional Eating Community.
