Last week, we talked about guarding the door to your mind. We learned that not every thought we have deserves our attention. Just because the thought is there doesn’t make it true.

This week, we are talking about how to identify the "thought thieves." These are the negative thoughts that steal our peace, confidence, hope, and joy. These thoughts have played over in our heads so many times that there is no questioning if it is true anymore.

The negative thoughts change how we see ourselves and our relationship with food.

Negative thoughts slowly take over your way of thinking. At first, you might notice that what you are thinking or saying is negative, but after a while, it will become who you are. You are no longer aware that you have allowed negative thoughts to take over.

You might be wondering why negative thoughts affect how we eat. Our Thoughts determine how we feel about ourselves and the people around us. If you had a hard day and you think, “I blew my diet today.” That thought creates guilt, and with guilt comes more negative thoughts. “I’ve already messed up, so it doesn’t matter. I’ll start Monday again.”

Food is not what started the cycle all over again; it was the negative thoughts. Change happens when we become aware of our negative thinking and try to change that pattern. Our brains are designed to create habits. Our thought patterns create pathways that your brain goes to when it is under stress.

If you go for a walk in a field that has tall grass, it would be difficult at first. But if you walk the same path every day, you will eventually create a path. Your brain works the same way.

Create new patterns for your brain to follow.

This week's challenge is to notice when “thought thieves” are trying to take over your thinking. Don’t judge yourself; just notice your thought patterns. Awareness helps you create change. The more you recognize the negative thoughts, the better chance you have to change them.
